Base colors and markings

The Dachshund Club of America identifies base colors including red, cream, black and tan, chocolate and tan, wild boar, gray or blue, and fawn or Isabella. Tan points may appear over the eyes and on the muzzle, chest, legs, paws, and under the tail. Cream markings can appear in similar areas on some dogs.

Lighting, age, coat length, and camera processing can change how a color looks in a photo. Ask for current images and a live video call when appearance is important to you.

What dapple means

Dapple is a pattern that creates lighter areas over the underlying color. It is not a separate breed or size. Pattern genetics deserve a careful conversation because breeding two dapples together can create double-dapple puppies with increased risk of serious eye and hearing problems.

A color label should never replace questions about the parents, pedigree, genetic screening, clinical health records, and the breeder’s pairing decisions.

The Ditsy Doxie parents

Reeses Pieces “Reese” is a chocolate and tan dapple long-haired boy. Silly Goose “Goose” is a black based cream long-haired boy. Lottie Dottie “Lottie” is a chocolate and tan long-haired girl. Their descriptions help families understand the parents; they are not a promise that a future litter will contain a specific color, pattern, eye color, or adult size.
