Build strength without unnecessary impact
Regular, appropriate exercise helps maintain muscle tone and a healthy body condition. The AKC advises owners to monitor activities that could injure the back and to avoid repeated running on stairs or jumping on and off furniture. Ramps, gates, rugs on slippery floors, and lifting guidance from your veterinarian can make the home easier to navigate.
Avoiding all movement is not the goal. A dachshund needs exercise and enrichment. Ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your puppy’s age, condition, and medical history.
Keep the dog lean
Extra weight adds strain and can make safe movement harder. Measure meals, count treats as part of the daily total, and use hands-on body-condition checks rather than judging only by the number on a scale. Your veterinarian can help set a healthy target as the puppy grows.
Know the warning signs
Pain, a hunched back, reluctance to walk, limping, wobbliness, dragging the hind legs, or suddenly avoiding stairs and furniture can be signs of a spinal problem. A dog that cannot walk needs emergency veterinary attention. Do not wait for an online article to diagnose a painful or neurologic change.
